The small probe LEV-1, equipped with Seiko Instruments' miniature ball bearings,
successfully completed its mission on the lunar surface!
On January 20, 2024 (Japan Standard Time), JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) successfully achieved a pinpoint lunar landing with its Smart Lander for Investigating moon, "SLIM". Furthermore, the rovers "LEV-1" and "LEV-2 (SORA-Q)" released from SLIM also succeeded in capturing images of SLIM on the lunar surface and transmitting data back to the ground station. The achievement of LEV-1's lunar surface hopping movement, lunar surface robot-to-robot communication between LEV-1 and LEV-2, including full autonomous functionality with movement, marks a world-first achievement.
LEV-1, which accomplished fully autonomous hopping movement and played a role in transferring data back to Earth, uses Seiko Instruments' full ball bearings in its actuators.
